What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment also known as endodontics and is a treatment used in dentistry to remove damaged or dead pulp tissues which are found at the core of a tooth.

Once all the pulp tissues have been removed and the canals are disinfected the tooth can then be restored.

The tooth may be restored with a simple filling or a crown.

Why do i need root canal treatment?

You will need root canal work to save a tooth that has become very badly decayed or infected. Usually root canal treatment is needed if tooth decay is left for a long period of time and the tooth gets a bacterial infection in its pulp. This bacterial infection can cause a number of symptoms including:

  • Severe toothache especially when chewing.
  • Additional sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Darkening of the tooth colour.

The bacterial infection can develop into an abcess causing the soft tissues around the mouth and face to swell.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of root canal treatment are:

  • Once the pulp tissues of the tooth are removed your toothache will be gone.
  • The tooth will be saved/restored and will not need removing.
