TMJ

The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is the ball and socket joint that connects the lower jaw to the bone on either side of your head.

The Temporomandibular joint is stabilised by muscles that make it possible for your mouth to open and close.

In many cases the TMJ can become very tender and painful leading to a TMJ disorder.

What causes a TMJ disorder?

The most likely cause of a TMJ disorder is trauma to the jaw which may be the result of an accident. In some cases a TMJ disorder may develop through stress and anxiety.

Common signs and symptoms!

  • tenderness or pain in the face, jaw and ear;
  • chewing discomfort or difficulty chewing;
  • headaches;
  • painful clicking of the jaw;
  • difficulty opening or closing the mouth;
  • locking jaw or teeth that don't come together properly while biting or chewin.

Treating TMJ!

It is important that you see your dentist if you feel you are suffering from a TMJ disorder.

You need to discuss with your dentist the symptoms you are experiencing and discover the cause of the problem.

Once your dentist has this information they will be able to devise the right treatment plan for you.

Treatments of TMJ can include

  • pain relief;
  • jaw and muscle exercises;
  • mouth guards;
  • surgery.
